Welcome to our List of Greek Islands page. I try to give you a summary of the most important of them. Listing them all would be too long and unnecessary.   I mention here the islands as they are known and how their names are transliterated from the Greek Language.

All of them without exceptions have great Greek Islands beaches, but also all kind of attractions for the tourists, beside the beaches. They are divided by groups on municipalities.

Saronic Gulf Islands

  • Aegina is one of the three Islands of Aegina, Hydra and Poros visited on the One day Cruise out of Athens. It is famous for the growing of pistachios.

  • Hydra has great connections to Athens with catamarans and hydrofoils. The island depends of tourism from the mainland.               
  • Poros is still unspoiled and very authentic. It features beautiful beaches and a very verdant landscape.
  • Spetses has great beaches like Agios Mamas, Agio Anargiroi and Agia Paraskevi

The Northern Sporades

  • Skiathos is a small island with over 65 beaches. It takes just a few minutes to drive from one extreme of the island to another.

  • Skopelos is the greenest island in Greece. This is a small paradise that combines blue sea and dense green forests.
  • Skyros is the largest of the Sporades Islands. The Greek Air Force has as major base in Skyros, because the island’s location in the Aegean Sea.
  • Alonissos is ideal for those looking for a quiet ambiance and lots of walking areas like beautifully manicured trails. The beaches are unspoiled and amazingly beautiful.

The Ionian Islands

  • Corfu is located near the west coast of Greece. Its Mediterranean weather is ideal for visitors that flock to the islands by the thousands. Please visit our page on Corfu Beaches
  • Ithaki or Ithaca is located near Kefalonia and is within sight of Continental Greece. It features one of the world’s largest natural harbors.
  • Kefalonia or Cephalonia is the largest of the Ionian Islands in western Greece. Its capital is called Argostoli.
  • Kythira or Kythera offers beaches, attractions and museums and many hidden beauties to be discovered.
  • Lefkada or Leucas or Leucadia or Lefkas, is connected to the mainland by a causeway and floating bridges.
  • Paxi is the smallest of the six main Ionian Islands. Once you arrive at Gaios, the island’s port you will discover many beauties of this small island. The beaches are pristine and great for swimming, snorkeling and fishing.
  • Zakynthos or Zante is the third largest of the Ionian Islands.

The Dodecanese Islands

  • Kalymnos is located on the southeastern Aegean Sea near the coast of Turkey and the Turkish peninsula of Bodrum. It is located near Rhodes.
  • Kasos or Kassos is the southernmost island of the Aegean Sea. It is near the Island of Crete separated by the Strait of Kasos. It is a mountainous island.
  • Kos is a beautiful tropical island near the coasts of Turkey and also near Rhodes. The capital also called Kos is a beautiful Mediterranean town with tree lined streets.
  • Nisyros is a volcanic Greek island located between the islands of Kos and Tilos

  • Patmos is known for its famous Monastery of St John that can be seen from every corner of the island. We visited the Island taking a group of Christian Pilgrims. Please visit our page on Patmos.

  • Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese islands in land and population. For more information we feature pages on Rhodes Beaches and Rhodes Island.
  • Tilos is a small Greek island midway between Kos and Rhodes. The island is called in Turkish İlyaki and in modern Italian Piscopi.
  • Zaforas is a small Greek island in the southern Dodecanese chain

Island of the Aegean Sea

  • Chios is the fifth largest Greek Island separated from Turkey by the Chios strait.

  • Ikaria or Icaria is a beautiful Greek Island with awe inspiring panoramas, therapeutic hot springs and pristine beaches. Vist our page on Ikaria Greece.
  • Lesbos is located in the northeastern Aegean Sea. It is the third largest Greek island. It is located near Turkey and separated only by the Straits of Mytilini.  
  • Samos has been kept unspoiled by mass tourism. It has amazing turquoise waters with lots of marine life great for Scuba Diving.

The Cyclades

  • Andros is the northernmost island of the Greek Cyclades archipelago, located near the big island of Evia. It features beautiful mountains and valleys.
  • Delos is known for being the birthplace of Apollo. The small, rocky, dry island of Delos has no hotels, no restaurants and no inhabitants. You can only visit it during the daytime on a daytrip.
  • Iosos is a hilly island with cliffs down to the sea on most sides. It is located situated halfway between Naxos and Santorini.

  • Milos is called “The Island of Colors” for its great rock formations. It is located west of Santorini between Crete and the Greek mainland. For more information on Milos Beaches go to our page.

  • Mykonos is in my opinion the most renowned of all Greek Islands. Please read more on our page about Mykonos.
  • Naxos In the heart of Cyclades has tall mountains like Za and Fanari Mountains. It has beautiful clean beaches and secluded coves.
  • Paros is one of the largest islands of the Cyclades located about halfway between Athens and Santorini.
  • Santorini also called Thera is in my opinion the most beautiful of all Greek Islands. For more information, go to our page about Santorini Beaches.
  • Sikinos was known as Oinoe , the Island of Wine, in Ancient Greece. It is underdeveloped and very quiet.
  • Syros is close to Piraeus, the trip by ferry takes only 4 hours.

Independent larger Islands

  • Crete is the largest and most populous of the Greek islands, the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean Sea. For information about Crete Beaches, please visit our page.

  • Euboea or Evia, is also known as Evvia or Euboia. It is Greece's second-largest island, just after Crete. It is very easy to get to because the closeness to the mainland.
