There is a very rare experience to be seen in the north coast of Hispaniola, the humpback whales from the North Atlantic return to the area every year during the months of January to April.
Here in the waters of the Republica Dominicana they mate and give birth. At some point about 1,500 of them are circulating in the area, being the most popular of all places Silver Bank an enormous reef northeast of Puerto Plata.
Another good spot for whale watchers is the Bay of Samana, distant 2 and a half mile.

Getting to Puerto Plata Dominican Republic
Getting there is very easy due to the many airports the visitors can use. First of all the nearest one a few miles to the west of the city is Gregorio Luperon International Airport.
Santiago’s Cibao International Airport about one hour south is also very convenient. Between the two airports there are flights arriving from all over the world. Some are schedule airlines and some are charters.
I have been waiting at the Luperon Airport and have been a witness of about 10 jumbo jets lined up arriving or departing to every corner of Europe.
